Community Based Child Abuse Prevention
Most parents genuinely love their children. Despite this, child abuse and neglect can occur in any family. Families with a concrete support network and knowledge of appropriate childhood behaviors have a better chance of keeping their children safe from abuse and neglect. Understanding this, the Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention program strives to offer resources to parents through local communities. When education and positive community supports are available to parents, we can prevent child abuse before it occurs.
CBCAP funds provide the following such services:
Parent Education
Focuses on parenting techniques, child development, and age-appropriate behaviors while creating an informal, supportive network among attendees.
Family Support
Creates a forum to address stressors in the lives of families and increase their access to resources.
Respite and Crisis Child Care
Provides a safe, caring environment for children while granting a break to parents, particularly during times of
extreme difficulty.
Sexual Abuse Prevention
Educates parents, community members and children about sexual abuse and how to prevent it.
Community Awareness
Promotes activities that focus on healthy, positive family development and builds community understanding of child abuse prevention.
CBCAP is a federally funded program, which began as a result of the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act in 1985. Prevent Child Abuse Iowa manages the funds to support CBCAP services, as well as provide support and guidance to organizations that offer direct family care.
