AmeriCorps
The federal government encourages community involvement among citizens across the country through the AmeriCorps program. AmeriCorps members carry out activities, which focus on social and environmental issues. Since 2007, Prevent Child Abuse Iowa has received funding to execute an AmeriCorps program. There are 10 AmeriCorps members throughout the state of Iowa focused on preventing child abuse in their respective communities.
While programs exist to prevent child abuse from occurring, there are limited resources available to provide all families access to the services and raise the public’s understanding of the issue and its effects on society. While more resources are necessary, the AmeriCorps member’s sole focus on preventing child abuse is a step in the right direction.
Under the guidance of local organizations, which serve families, AmeriCorps members work to strengthen the community by promoting resources and building community connections. Some specific responsibilities may include:
- Volunteer recruitment
- Special event planning and promotion
- Raise awareness of the importance to end child abuse
- Inform parents and community members ways to prevent child abuse
- Assist in the implementation of parent education and support programs
AmeriCorps members receiving limited wages for their work, in addition to health benefits an education stipend at the end of a one year term. Members can serve for up to two years.
