Legislative Agenda

Prevent Child Abuse Iowa’s 2010 advocacy agenda calls for legislation to extend Iowa’s income tax checkoff for child abuse prevention services. Proceeds from the checkoff benefit the Iowa Child Abuse Prevention Program. This checkoff was first established by legislation in 2008 and is subject to discontinuance after two years.

 

In the 2009 legislative session, Prevent Child Abuse Iowa successfully advocated for the development of a statewide shaken baby syndrome prevention (SBS) program. This legislation has led to creation of a plan to prevent SBS. For more information on the Legislature's action, read PCA Iowa's Summer/Fall 2009 newsletter.

 

Child Abuse Prevention Services

Prevent Child Abuse Iowa's child abuse prevention programs assist more than 16,000 adults and 65,000 children annually. Local program efforts support families and make children safer in more than 90 Iowa counties. Annual reports on the program activities are available here.

Iowa Child Abuse Cases Drop in 2008 for the Second Year in a Row

Iowa Department of Human Services reports confirmed 12.227 children were abused in 2008 - a drop of almost fourteen percent from 2007. PCA Iowa has produced a report on this decline in child abuse, which you can read; click here.

 

Homicides of Iowa's Young Children
Annual reports of Iowa's Child Death Review Team show that 112 of this state's children under seven years old were homicide victims from 1995-2007. PCA Iowa's study of thirteen years of team reports reveals the extra risk that very young children face, details the causes and perpetrators of young child homicides, and summarizes recommendations on how to reduce these deaths. Costs of Child Abuse
Prevent Child Abuse America has released a new report on the immediate and long-term costs to society of child abuse. PCA Iowa has examined the report and updated its Societal Costs of Child Abuse page with the new figures and new research on child abuse, juvenile offenses, and adult criminality.

Prevent Child Abuse Iowa's child abuse prevention programs assisted more than 19,000 adults and 67,000 children in 91 Iowa counties in the last program year. Program reports are available here.
