Legislative Agenda

The 2008 Legislature enacted a new income tax checkoff for child abuse prevention. Proceeds will go to support the Iowa Child Abuse Prevention Program. For more information on the Legislature's action, read PCA Iowa's Summer/Fall 2008 newsletter.

 

 

The 2007 legislature approved $200,000 in additional funding for PCA Iowa’s child sexual abuse prevention programs.  To read about the legislature’s actions and the resultant expansion of these programs, see PCA Iowa’s Spring 2007 newsletter.

 

Child Abuse Prevention Services

Prevent Child Abuse Iowa's child abuse prevention programs assisted 10,000 adults and 56,000 children in 91 Iowa counties in 2006-07. Annual reports on the programs are available here.

Iowa Child Abuse Cases Decline in 2007 for the Second Year in a Row

Iowa Department of Human Services reports confirmed that 13,529 children were abused in 2007 – approximately 500 fewer than in 2006 and 1,500 less than 2005. PCA Iowa has produced a report on this decline in child abuse, which you can read; click here.

 

Costs of Child Abuse
Prevent Child Abuse America has released a new report on the immediate and long-term costs to society of child abuse. PCA Iowa has examined the report and updated its Societal Costs of Child Abuse page with the new figures and new research on child abuse, juvenile offenses, and adult criminality.

 

Homicides of Iowa's Young Children
Annual reports of Iowa's Child Death Review Team show that 106 of this state's children under seven years old were homicide victims from 1995-2006. PCA Iowa's study of the team's 12 years of reports reveals the extra risk that very young children face, details the causes and perpetrators of young child homicides, and summarizes recommendations on how to reduce these deaths.
