Sandra Alexander, MEd, will present the opening keynote presentation, “The Past, Present, and Future of Child Maltreatment Prevention.” Sandra has 40 years experience in child abuse prevention including hands on CPS casework and supervision in South Carolina, prevention programming and advocacy, and 18 years non profit management in child abuse prevention organizations. Currently, she is a Subject Matter Expert in Child Maltreatment in the Division of Violence Prevention (DVP), National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She works on CDC child maltreatment prevention initiatives including leadership for DVP’s Knowledge to Action Child Maltreatment Prevention Consortium and a cross-division Shaken Baby Prevention Initiative. She also represents the CDC on other national child maltreatment initiatives. In addition to her opening keynote, Sandra will present a workshop entitled, “Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention: From “Don’t Shake” to “Coping with Crying.”
Emily Ballance, MEd, LPC, will present the closing keynote, "Humor and Hope for Helping Professionals." Emily entertains, educates, and inspires audiences with her humor, honesty, and lively stories. Her presentations to associations, healthcare organizations, corporations, and state and national conferences have been described as "highly entertaining, uplifting and thought-provoking." Emily holds a Master of Education and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a former lecturer and counselor at the Duke University Dietary Clinic in Durham, NC, and wellness consultant for StayWell, a highly successful and innovative employee wellness program at Control Data Corporation in Los Angeles, CA. Also a Licensed Professional Counselor, and the author of numerous humor and health related articles, Emily is committed to helping people use positive, affirming humor to enhance their health, happiness, work, and well-being. In addition to her closing keynote presentation, Emily will present a workshop called, “Understanding and Working with Different Ages and Generations.” (www.emilyballance.com)
Prevent Child Abuse Iowa’s 28th annual conference was held April 20-21, 2009 at the Sheraton West Des Moines.
The theme of the 2009 conference was “Building Healthy Families.”
